The Opportunity
The Winnipeg Sun is seeking a journalist to join our team as a reporter covering Winnipeg, political news. Duties may include covering news events, writing features, editing and posting content online and appearing on video discussing current events.
Who you are:
· An in-depth perspective on events affecting Canadians, and a thorough knowledge of all levels of government.
· Excelled for a minimum of five years as a journalist
· A proven track record of generating first-rate stories and features on multiple platforms.
· Thrives in a fast-paced news environment and drives a news agenda with commentary that reflects the Sun brand.
Qualifications:
· A journalism degree or diploma plus five years of experience at a news operation
· Demonstrated ability to generate thought-provoking stories
· Superior writing skills, news judgment and media experience
· Able to adapt to emerging trends in multimedia reporting, including video and social networking.

The Opportunity:
The Portage Graphic Leader is hiring for a temporary full-time position for a reporter funded through the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI).
In this role, you will be responsible for pitching, reporting and filing daily stories that align with the contract agreement to produce breaking and investigative stories on local civic, social and economic issues in Portage and surrounding areas.
About LJI:
The Local Journalism Initiative supports the creation of original civic journalism that covers the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada.
Funding is available to eligible Canadian media organizations to hire journalists or pay freelance journalists to produce civic journalism for underserved communities.
The content produced will be available to news media organizations across the country through a Creative Commons licence so that Canadians can be better informed.
Created by the Government of Canada in 2019, the Local Journalism Initiative is administered on its behalf by seven administrator organizations, including News Media Canada.
What you'll do:
• Work in a remote newsroom environment
• Collaborate with the editor in Portage
• Pitch daily and feature stories to the editor
• Identify photo needs to editors
• Build relationships and networks with sources in and around Portage
• File stories via WordPress for copyediting
- share published stories to LJI portal
• Possible travel to communities in the coverage area
Who you are:
• Reporter with degree in journalism or equivalent experience
• Curious and multipassionate individual with excellent storytelling skills
• Embrace fair, balanced and ethical reporting
• Knowledge of northern Saskatchewan and Indigenous communities
• Experienced in filing freedom of information requests
• Thrive in a fastpaced environment with the ability to pivot and multitask
• Experienced in remote work including the use of Teams
• Photography skills are an asset
